Comprehensive Workplace Management Services at the NPO
The Dutch Public Broadcasting Foundation (NPO) was designated in 2008 as the governing and coordinating body of the Dutch public broadcasting system. The broadcasters produce the programs and are responsible for their content. The NPO is responsible for coordinating the programming of all networks, channels, and platforms. In addition, the NPO handles the (technical) distribution and broadcast of all programs. Dion Voogd is the Product Owner for ServiceDesk & Application Management at the NPO. In short, the service desk team is responsible for standard management tasks and serves as the first point of contact within the organization. The staff in the Application Management department handle non-standard applications. They support all NPO employees, approximately 50% of whom use Windows, while the other 50% work with Apple devices.
Contributing ideas for future developments
Dion started out on the service desk at the NPO in early 2017 and therefore knows all the ins and outs of the department. He began his current position in early 2019, at which time Root3 was already providing service and maintenance. In 2021, a second contract was awarded to provide a more comprehensive service for Apple workplace management. Dion explains: “We chose Root3 again—this time for their Premium Service—primarily because of their ability to help us plan for future developments and address potential challenges. For example: if an employee is working remotely and their laptop is stolen, how can we remotely wipe the data? They really helped us think through those kinds of issues.”
A pleasant approach and accessible communication
Root3’s Premium Service offers the NPO a comprehensive package that goes a step beyond standard support. Dion explains a few aspects of the service: “We have a monthly meeting, either remotely or on-site. During these meetings, we discuss ongoing matters related to, for example, OneDrive, policies, or collaborations with other vendors. All ongoing projects and their progress are accessible through a project management tool.” With the Premium Service, Root3 also provides a toolbox of resources that the NPO can utilize. “That way, for example, you can review cases from other clients or consult with them about issues you’re both facing. Recently, another Root3 client came by to see how we’d solved a problem, and that works both ways. I genuinely really appreciate that approach.” When asked to summarize the biggest advantage of Root3’s service, Dion says resolutely: “I can—and I mean this in a completely positive way—just drop my problems on them, and Root3 makes sure they get solved! Communication is also very accessible.”
Root3 and the Future
What are the plans for the future? Dion explains that security is currently high on the NPO’s agenda. “We have our own security department, and it has specific requirements that Root3 works with. What’s necessary? What do we block, and what don’t we, to keep things workable? And then we continuously review together—in a very Agile way—what needs to be adjusted.” Dion adds , “What’s needed is very much driven by changing organizational needs or by Apple developments, and we respond to those—with Root3’s help. There will certainly still be a role for Root3 in this going forward. Especially because you can tell that their goal isn’t to sell as much as possible, but to contribute as much as possible to the process.”
